Tallahassee Picnic Creates Socially-Distanced Events for Community

By Lexie Pitzen

TALLAHASSEE, Fla — Kate Biel, the owner, creative director, and head picnic-maker at Tallahassee Picnic, has lived in Tallahassee for 11 years. She has two black and tan chihuahuas named Puppy and Kipsie. Her favorite picnic accessories are brie cheese and red wine, and she thinks October through March is peak picnic weather. She says picnics are best experienced barefoot and with a friend.

Biel first had the idea to create Tallahassee Picnic earlier this year. And when the pandemic changed the lives of many, she knew it was time to put her ideas into motion. “I’ve been in the event industry for over 10 years, and having a full calendar of once-in-a-lifetime events rescheduled or canceled last minute really broke my heart,” she said. “The solution in my mind was to create an outlet for small, socially distant, outdoor parties.”

Tallahassee Picnic hosts picnics for a variety of occasions. Biel said her heart is in marriage proposals and bridal showers. “Helping others create a moment to celebrate love is so rewarding,” she said. “The beautiful thing is that the simplicity of a picnic can really be celebrated by anyone for any reason.” She added one of her favorite picnic settings is Tallahassee’s public parks. “We are so lucky to live in a place that has such gorgeous and ancient live oak trees,” she said. “The shade from these trees and their low hanging boughs are gorgeous. My next step is to head to the gulf coast and scout out the perfect beach location.”

Biel gathers much of her inspiration for styling picnics from nature. She likes to use natural-dyed linens and real flowers to decorate picnic tables. She said she wants her picnics to feel like they are part of the outdoors space they are set in. “I also really vibe with that scene from Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette movie, where Marie is in the garden of her summer chalet having this extraordinarily luxurious boho-chic picnic with all her lords and ladies,” she added.

Tallahassee Picnic is just getting started, but Biel has goals to expand in the future. “I would love for Tallahassee Picnic to continue to expand and create amazing picnic experiences but also inspire others to think outside of the box for their events,” she said. “I am planning to create picnic design content on my website, and from there I hope to grow a picnic-loving community.”
