The Story Behind Tallahassee’s Newest Axe Throwing Spot, Tomahawks 51

The founders of Tallahassee’s newest axe throwing spot, Tomahawks 51, Erika and Will Tetsworth, can’t imagine a better place than the Capital City to have planted their unique and thrilling business. After coming up with the idea to start this business in 2018, it took less than a year for Tomahawks 51’s doors to open in July of 2019.

Alumni from Florida State University, Mrs. Tetsworth is a realtor with Keller Williams Realty, and Mr. Tetsworth is a cyber security/network engineer with Cisco Systems, but the 2 have another passion—axe throwing. “Over the last year or so, we have been to 15+ locations around the country and love it so much that we thought Tallahassee should have one,” they share.

The Tetsworths wanted to provide a “fun environment” for the sport, while also bringing something “stress relieving, but most importantly, safe,” to Tallahassee. Opening up a spot for friends to spend time together and learn their favorite sport only made sense. Their favorite part of owning such a unique business is “seeing the amount of fun” that customers have during their axe throwing sessions.

The Tetworths note that at Tomahawks 51, unlike at some axe throwing spots, they steer clear of having a “lifeguard mentality.” “This means that there aren’t 1 or 2 employees (axe masters) watching 20-30 people during sessions,” they explain. Tomahawks 51 specializes in highly-focused sessions, making sure that customers are not only safe, but also fully engaged while learning and participating. “We provide an axe master with each group who not only provides feedback on throwing techniques, but will keep everyone safe and engaged during a slew of games.”

Those ages 13 and up (so long as they have the strength/coordination required to participate) can visit and learn to throw at Tomahawks 51. It is required that all children must be under the immediate control of an adult (1 adult per range watching children under 17 years of age). Kids under the age of 8 are not allowed on site.

Food ordered from Tomahawks 51’s partners, Moes, Stone Cold, Momo’s Pizza, Firehouse Subs, Panda Express, and Mann’s Doghouse, is allowed on site. Beer, wine, soda, and water, are sold at the bar.

Located at 1416 West Tennessee St, Tomahawks 51 offers an exciting and eclectic sport venue in Tallahassee. Find Tomahawks 51 on Facebook here, and Instagram here.
